Disturbed vs. Phil Collins

I have made it very clear on this site about my feelings pertaining to Heavy Metal Bands doing pop covers, but I have also mentioned in past blogs that some of these covers are okay. In fact the cover we are going to talk about for Disturbed Week is kick ass. I imagine it makes Phil Collins ears bleed, but man its awesome.

Phil Collins both solo and with Genesis has some very epic long lasting songs that will be sung by generations. Lately hip-hop artists have taken to not only using Collins back beats, but his lyrics. That’s a good sign of a generational artist. But this is a heavy metal site and Phil Collins isn’t exactly mentioned in the names of Ozzy, Dio, or Kevin Dubrow. In fact if you were at a Heavy Metal concert with a Genesis shirt on you better get ready for an ass kicking.

Anyway a few years ago our band of the week Disturbed covered Land of Confusion and it instantly caught on with the Heavy Metal fans and even drug in some of the old Phil Collins fans. The song is a great timepiece about the state of the world and how it really is going nowhere quick. It’s a universal message that needs to be heard and if Disturbed can cover it in a genre that I enjoy listening to then more power to them. As artists of different genres learn to work together to get the language of music and its lessons to the masses we will all understand each other a little better. Be it Devil Horns or Keyboards, music is music. We all enjoy it different, but we all learn something from it.

You will find on YouTube and below both versions of the song. Give them a listen to, their both great songs with universal appeal, but lets face the facts, the Disturbed version is so much better!
